Clarinet

The clarinet is a single-reed instrument. The sound is made by vibration caused by blowing air across the reed. Finger-holes are covered or uncovered to generate different notes.

The reed looks like grass or wood; some people say it looks like bamboo. However, it is actually called ‘reed’ or ‘reed cane’. Reeds are grown like wood or grass or even bamboo. Then they are cut and shaved to precise size which allow them to be used to make music on an instrument like the clarinet.

A beginning clarinet student needs:

  • Clarinet (A clarinet neck strap is not necessary but a good idea for beginners.)
  • Reeds (2-2.5 Strength)
  • Band Book: Essential Elements 2000 Book 1 for Clarinet
  • A collapsible wire music stand
  • Pencil
